Starting Over In Your 30s - Exciting Adventures Abroad or Fresh Beginnings at Home?
Regardless of your age, there is never truly the absolute perfect moment to just start over again, to pack up everything and move to the other side of the world, or even stay within your own country and move to the next town. Picking up and starting over isn't easy, but is it worth it? Well, that's not for me to answer.
After living abroad for more than 16 years with several international and intercontinental moves under my belt, I can say without a doubt that things don't necessarily get easier, but you do get a better sense of what's coming and how to plan for it. But knowing what lies ahead can also make starting over feel even more daunting. While some elements, like moving with your job or keeping long-distance friendships, can ease the transition, the overall challenge remains.
Your social life is a major factor. If you have zero social life where you are, that might be a reason you're thinking about starting over. Yet, if you're a quiet person in your hometown, you might still be that quiet person in a new location. Of course, there's something to be said for feeling trapped by your familiar surroundings and finding freedom to explore yourself and the world in a new place. But remember, wherever you go, you bring yourself along with you. Knowing who you are, what makes you comfortable, and what challenges you can help in making a new start.
Starting over offers a new adventure with many paths, each filled with uncertainties and potential stressors. Planning ahead and understanding what's coming can make a huge difference. Simple things like bringing familiar items can help a new place feel like home. For example, I keep little knickknacks from special moments, like a trip to Rome with a good friend, to remind me of good times and make my space feel familiar.
While starting over can be exciting, it's important not to get stuck reminiscing about past perfect moments. Dwelling on the past can hinder your growth and ability to embrace new experiences. This is especially true in your 30s when financial and career stability become more significant. It's crucial to consider the impact of your decisions on your future, like social security contributions and pension plans.
Despite the challenges, starting over is definitely doable. Making educated decisions based on more than just feelings is essential. Reflect on past experiences and use them to inform your new journey, but be realistic about the limitations and opportunities at your current stage in life.
Ultimately, the decision to move and start over is deeply personal. No place is perfect, and it's crucial to understand the pros and cons of potential new locations. This balanced approach ensures that your decision is made with a clear and realistic perspective, allowing for an adventurous yet thoughtful new beginning.
